The Catlins Great Escape Coastal Walk

Catlins Coastal Walk 2016 - Sunday February 14th  Weirs Beach - Curio Bay - Porpoise Bay - Waikawa

Information will also be posted on Facebook page.

The Catlins has a variety of features which make it unique to the eastern coast of the South Island. It is rugged, remote and endowed with large tracts of native rainforest. It has abundant wildlife, is sparsely populated and is very scenic and unspoilt.
Join us on this unique walk, the 6th in the series of coastal walks.
This walk is approx 14 kms or 3-4 hours.
Your walk will start at Weirs Beach. From here you will make your way along the stunning coast looking down rugged headlands to Haldane Bay with magnificent views of Slope Point, New Zealand’s most southern land mark.
Crossing over private farm land inaccessible to the public, we will make our way north to the famous Curio Bay and the Petrified Forrest - an ancient geological phenomenon of international significance. Fossilised trees similar to Kauri and Matai lie embedded on coastal bedrock, remnants of a 180 million year old Jurassic era forest.  This walk sports incredible northern coastal views along a stunning stretch of the Southland coastline.
From Curio Bay we will walk along Porpoise Bay back to Waikawa Hall.
This coastal area has significant natural values as well as being a prime penguin nesting habitat. It also supports NZ fur seals, NZ sealions, numerous seabird species, rare coastal plant communities, small remnants of native forest, and archaeological sites.
Concluding at Waikawa we will enjoy a BBQ meal and refreshments.
